Fell running and fresh air....good for the mind

The Scafell range from 3 Tarns
Yesterday and today we've been getting some mileage in on the fells. Running over Red Screes yesterday and over Bowfell today.
Both days were characterised by strong and bitterly cold Easterly winds, but mostly clear skies and far reaching views more than compensated for this.
Yesterday was a solo run for me. Following the track from Ambleside up to Scandale Pass, then up to the summit plateau of Red Screes. The broad and grassy ridge then gave a wonderful descent that felt really fast. As is usually the case, this route was very quiet, I passed only 3 walkers during the whole route.

Today we drove the short distance into Langdale. Kate joined me today as we took in Bowfell via The Climbers traverse and The Great Slab. Sections of compacted snow slowed us from time to time, but for the most part we could run as normal. Lots of walkers out enjoying the clear weather, but we had the more technical sections of the route all to ourselves.
The strong easterly wind made sure we didn't hang around high on the mountain, so a rapid descent was called for and that's what we did. Blasting down to 3 Tarns then back down The Band to find increasingly warm conditions as we became sheltered from the wind.
Two sublime trips into the local mountains. It has been good to get away from the news, even for a short time.

Wishing good health to all

Mark & Kate

Enjoying perfect winter walking during a round of Fairfield Horseshoe
A last minute booking this week saw our guide Sam team up with David.
David was keen to complete the Fairfield Horseshoe, but given the wintery weather of late had asked us if we could provide a guide. Thankfully Sam had a free day and the plan all came together, oh and so did the weather.

Mostly snowy rather than icy conditions high up, although full winter kit was all carried (as it should be on snow days), walking poles did the trick. Much less snow at lower levels and a thaw is on the cards for later this week. Who knows how much longer the mountain snow will stay. Still, it always looks magical when it's there.

Thanks David for your booking and to Sam for the great day we know you will have provided and for the photos.

For guided walks during summer or winter, throughout the Lake District and further afield, please do get in touch. We'll do our best to make your perfect mountain day happen.

All the best

Mark
