Scafell Pike from Borrowdale
Quick facts:
About the route:
With numerous possibilities starting from Seathwaite, our proposed route goes via Styhead Tarn.
A gentle introduction brings us to the picturesque Stockley Bridge, and from here we follow Styhead Gill uphill all the way to the tarn of the same name. This is a natural stopping off point, to enjoy the views before we press on to join the Corridor route which crosses the tops of Greta & Piers Gills before levelling at Lingmell Col.
The final ascent onto the summit plateau is in common with the route from Wasdale.
360 degree views from the summit of Scafell Pike on a clear day are dramatic and varied, with sea, mountain, lake and valley all for the eyes enjoyment.
To return we may opt for a similar route, or may instead walk via Esk Hause. We can then either walk passed the beautiful Sprinkling Tarn or head down the pretty Ruddy Gill and Grains Gill back to Stockley Bridge.
- Starting point is Seathwaite, in the Southern reaches of Borrowdale valley
- How far is it? Around 10 miles
- How long will it take? Between 6 - 9 hours
- How much uphill / downhill? Around 860 metres of ascent & descent
- Level of difficulty: Medium - High
- What's the terrain like? Many of the paths are well maintained, particularly so in the lower reaches of the route. Beyond Styhead Tarn and near the summit, paths are rough and navigation can be difficult should it be misty.
