Scafell Pike Routes

Our guided walking routes to the summit of Scafell Pike can begin in the valleys of Wasdale, Borrowdale, Langdale or Eskdale.

Each valley and route have their own charms and all offer wonderful scenery.

Langdale & Borrowdale are the more accessible starting points for visitors staying in the Central Lakes area.

Wasdale is a stunningly beautiful valley, yes even more so than the others if that’s possible. It feels far removed from the modern world and all the better for it.

Eskdale is the esoteric choice for getting away from it all. Walking into The Great Moss being a special privilege and the scenery has that distinct 'wow' factor.

Our guided walks up Scafell Pike can be varied to add in other nearby peaks if you would like a more challenging day. Any of the following can be added: Scafell, Great End, Broad Crag, Ill Crag, Bowfell and Esk Pike. We can tailor the day to suit.

The Wasdale Route

En-route to the summit from Wasdale
Short and steep! Stunning views and the most inspiring mountain scenery in England.
  • 5 miles
  • 4 to 6 hours walking time
  • Mountain paths with uneven rocky terrain throughout. This is a steep route and for many does feel relentless.

The Langdale Route

#ScafellPikefromLangdale
Langdale Valley
A long & gradual start leads to a long steady ascent amongst beautiful surroundings.
  • 12 miles
  • 6 to 9 hours walking time
  • Mountain paths & uneven rocky terrain will be encountered. A big day out, only attempt this if you're very fit and/or a regular mountain walker.

The Borrowdale Route

Styhead Tarn on the Borrowdale Route
Medium / long and gradual. Mountain tarns are a highlight of this fine and varied route. An easier route than the Langdale approach, but not to be under-estimated.
  • 10 miles
  • 5 to 8 hours walking time
  • Mountain paths & uneven rocky terrain will be encountered. A couple of sections near the summit are very steep and rocky.

The Eskdale Route

#ScafellPikefromEskdale
Scafell Pike from Eskdale
A long route with steep sections higher on the mountain.  This itinerary follows a route over the remote and unique 'Great Moss'.
  • 10 miles
  • 6 to 9 hours walking time
  • Small footpaths, boggy sections, and uneven rocky terrain all make up this adventurous day
Should none of these routes be quite what you’re looking for, please do get in touch to discuss your requirements. It’s possible to add more mountains into the day, include some rock scrambling, or it may be a rock climbing route you have in mind. Whatever it is, we’ll do our best to make it happen.
