From the centre of Ambleside we take to the slopes of Wansfell Pike (482m). This is a mix of quiet lanes and well maintained footpaths that zigzag up towards the summit. This is steep and it is strategically sensible to take it slow, thus letting our muscles warm up. It should take about 1 hour to reach this first summit, where the big views open up. Windermere, Troutbeck and High Street, all of Langdale, the Coniston Fells, and more.
A gentle descent towards Troutbeck then leads us in the general direction of Windermere on good bridleways. This is fabulous walking terrain. Robin Lane takes us back to Ambleside.
Ambleside makes for a perfect pit-stop before we take to the slopes of summit number 2 - Loughrigg Fell (335m).
Firstly through Rothay Park then onto the aptly named Under Loughrigg Road. One we leave this quiet lane the gradient increases markedly and we will slow for this bit. The open mountainside is soon met and wonderfully panoramic views of the Fairfield Horseshoe will catch our attention.
Turning off the main bridleway shortly before Ivy Crag we now follow small tracks that meander their way towards the summit of Loughrigg Fell. There is a myriad of choice here and most of the little paths lead up to the summit. Yet again we are met with magical views in all directions, it is easy to see why this is a popular mountain with locals and visitors alike.
The initial descent to Loughrigg Terrace is steep but the path is decent. Loughrigg Terrace then brings some respite from the gradient as we parade high above Grasmere aiming for White Moss Woods then White Moss Common and an inconspicuous signpost setting us in the direction of Alcock tarn. This sees us heading back uphill, often at a steep gradient but always on a good path through glorious scenery.
In good weather we will aim to pause a while at Alcock tarn as this is a truly gorgeous place. What awaits now is a glory stroll to the final summit of the challenge, Nab Scar (455m). Once beyond Alcock tarn the terrain eases, although the path is now not quite so clear. The summit of Nab Scar can feel nondescript, but be assured its position is dramatic and it offers commanding views high above Rydal and over to Loughrigg
A steep, but easier than it looks descent takes us down to the tea room at Rydal Hall and by now we’ve all earned a brew.
From here a good bridleway takes us easily back to Ambleside.
