Lingmell Col route to Scafell Pike

Robert on the summit and celebrating the 3rd peak of this round

On Friday we were joined by Robert from South Wales. A regular and experienced hillwalker keen to revisit the 3 highest summits of mainland UK and Scafell Pike was the final part of this trilogy.

We set off from Wasdale Head early as the forecast was for lots of rain later in the day. This was to be a very very good decision.
Our pace was constant and swift, although we did make a few brief stops to admire the view back over Wastwater. Once into Hollowstones the view consisted of mist! There's something magical about this, and I'll always maintain that a cloudy/misty day can and often is the best, for views are fleeting, they are savoured even more.

At Lingmell Col the wind tried to snatch us from the ground, but we were prepared for it and hunkered down. Only a couple of hours after setting off we had arrived on a very quiet summit. Quit of people that is, for the roar of the wind was anything but quiet, it was absolutely magnificent and all encompassing. Days like these are simply the best 🙂

A quick photo and swig of water before we made our hasty retreat to warmer, calmer places lower down the mountain. For all the forecast had promised us rain by lunchtime, still none had fallen on us. In fact, it was not until we arrived back at Wasdale Head that it began to rain, good timing or what!!!
And talking of timings, we were just 3 hours 40 minutes total today. A quick time indeed, and Robert was doing this to celebrate his 70th birthday year!

On our descent we had seen quite a few parties heading up the mountain, they were not Going to be so lucky with the weather and for sure would be getting a soaking.

Our journey back to Ambleside took us over the Hardknott Pass. We came across a broken down van on the steepest section of this. Chatting with the driver and all was in hand with a recovery truck on the way, although quite how the van was going to be extracted we couldn't quite understand, good luck there guys!

As Robert was staying at our B&B here in Ambleside, Kate had Kindly made scones for our return. Yes we both got stuck into some of them, fresh from the oven 🙂
We're so happy to have been part of the journey for Robert.
